Jeff Rona is a prolific composer and recording artist whose career spans film, television, video games, and solo albums. Based in Los Angeles, he is known for work that seamlessly blends electronics, ambient soundscapes, and orchestral composition across every medium.
His feature film career began with Ridley Scott's White Squall, followed by his landmark television work scoring Barry Levinson's critically acclaimed series Homicide: Life on the Street. From there he became a key collaborator within Hans Zimmer's celebrated MediaVentures collective, contributing to some of the most iconic film scores of the era, including Gladiator, Traffic, Mission: Impossible 2, Black Hawk Down, The Thin Red Line, The Lion King, The Prince of Egypt, Toys, and The Fan.
His documentary work has had real-world impact: Rob Stewart's Sharkwater, which Jeff scored, contributed to a near-global ban on shark finning. He followed that with the sequel Sharkwater Extinction, along with Generation Iron, The New Fire, Poisoning Paradise, and others.
In video games, Jeff has composed for major AAA titles including God of War 3, Far Cry 4, Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry 5, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, The Callisto Protocol, and dozens more. He co-founded Emperia Sound and Music and Emperia Records, a video game music label.
Jeff has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists. He co-wrote, produced, and performed with ambient pioneer Jon Hassell under the production of Brian Eno. He orchestrated and conducted for Lisa Gerrard and toured with Dead Can Dance. He worked with composer Philip Glass on a feature film, on Glass's opera The Representative for Planet 8, and performed in a live concert of Music in 12 Parts. He collaborated with cellist Tina Guo and poet David Whyte.
He was commissioned to compose a concert work for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, which subsequently toured China. His solo albums, Projector, Vapor, Lume, and others, are released on Alpha Pup Records and Camerata Records. A prolific author, he wrote The Reel World: Scoring for Pictures, Television, and Video Games, now in its third expanded edition.
He has been a guest speaker at the first TED Conference on technology and creativity, at Berklee College of Music, UCLA Extension, and Columbia College Chicago, and is a five-time featured presenter at Soundtrack Cologne.
